Safety
Bay - Simply the best place to learn windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Extreme Sports Café’s partner Windsurfing School
offers windsurfing gear hire, tuition, and advice at all levels,
from kids all the way to advanced sailors.
What could be more satisfying than learning a new sport, then
traveling to exotic locations teaching others your newfound
skills? Add to that, a life on the beach, where your biggest
worry
is whether to go for a swim, read a book, or open another coconut.
Work opportunities are infinite, windsurfing can be found on
almost any tourist beach worldwide. Extreme Sports Café’s
Safety Bay windsurfing courses will help get you on your way.
With many new innovations in equipment recently, windsurfing
is becoming much easier to learn. Gone are the days of falling
off every two seconds, now beginner windsurfers can be sailing
up and down happily within a day or two. A fast learning curve
leads to greater windsurfing skills and knowledge in a relatively
short time.
Just
40 minutes drive south of Perth, are the popular windsurfing beaches
of Safety Bay, Shoalwater Bay and Warnboro Sound - home waters
of Extreme Sports Cafe's Windsurfing School. Our Australian Windsurfing
School is located in Safety Bay and offers courses for all Windsurfing
levels from Oct to April. A strong thermal sea breeze often referred
to as the "Fremantle Doctor" arrives most afternoons
during the summer months. Best sailing is from October to March
with wind speeds normally around 15 to 25 knots.
There
is a reason for the name – Safety Bay. The on-shore conditions
together with the sand spit create simply the best teaching
and learning conditions possible. The sand spit extends perpendicularly
out from the beach for 500 metres. This sand spit, with the
Windsurfers to the left and kitesurfers to the right separates
the Windsurfing and kitesurfing. This means no one is getting
in each other’s way. There is an established level of
safety, organisation, and most of all, respect here.
The bay is perfect for learning because the safety of on-shore
winds means no one’s getting blown out to sea. You can
also walk up the spit to get further up wind as you’re
learning.
On the windsurfing side, the sand bar drops off quite quickly.
This is especially useful to those windsurfers learning to carve
or water start just metres from our instructors.
The shallow bays are
great for beginners and the reefs, islands and sandbars protect
the sheltered waters providing ideal high-speed slalom conditions.
Penguin Island and Warnboro Sound challenge the more advanced
sailors with long exhilarating runs over short steep chop and
open ocean swell.
The season in WA starts up in early October and runs through
to late March /April. We do get sea breezes earlier and later
than this, but not so regularly. The general wind pattern is
a light easterly in the morning, swinging around gently to a
SW direction and building by about mid-day. Last year, my average
sail rented was in between 5.0m and 5.7m with over 6.0m rarely
getting used. Every couple of weeks, the wind really kicks in
hard to 4.0m weather for one or two days, as a heat through
pushes down from the north, then leaving us with hot, easterly
winds. During the summer, WA experiences heat troughs which
effectively kill the sea breezes for 2-3 days, but Safety Bay
seems to still get a sea breeze, albeit a late one, when Perth
gets nothing.
Whether you want to work at a large water sports centre teaching
formal courses, or are happier living on the beach giving informal
tuition to holiday makers, Extreme Sports Café’s
Safety Bay windsurfing courses will help get you on your way.
Safety
Bay is such a great place to learn windsurfing as the sand-spit
is at right angles to the sea breeze, meaning you can practice
beach starts and carve gybes right next to our instructors in
strong wind and nice flat water.

as first aid and powerboat handling. The courses also
include a 5-day wave clinic at Lancelin, WA. (Intermediates)

to offer a 1-week wave clinic at our Surf Camp in Lancelin,
WA. This area has a good deepwater break, is excellent
for your first attempts at waveriding and also has a protected

The
Safety Bay Windsurfing Club (SBWSC) exists for local
sailors and welcomes meeting and sailing with the
growing numbers of overseas visitors each year.
Safety Bay is a great place to commence your Western
Australian windsurfing experience before you safari
off to Lancelin, Geraldton, Shark Bay, Margaret
River and other internationally well-known locations.
The South Of Perth Yacht Club is on Coffee Point,
Applecross, and has the most amazing views over
both the Swan and Canning River, and over the City
of Perth. The club is ideally located to get very
clean morning easterlies, and is sheltered from
the full force of the sea breezes, which we get
most afternoons. All windsurfing equipment is stored
permanently rigged, leaving more time to actually
windsurf, and less time setting up. The club has
superb facilities including changing rooms, showers,
bar and restaurant.
When the wind doesn't turn up there are many other
attractions to suit the visitor. These include diving,
sailing, recreational boat and jetty fishing, vast
stretches of white sandy beaches, swimming with
wild dolphins and visiting sea lions and penguins
on the nearby islands. |
We can also help with accommodation in Safety Bay if you
require it, we have a list of all the nice available B&B
in the area, from 10min away from our centre.
