Simon Cunningham - For over 15 years Simon Cunningham has introduced thousands of people all over the world into this lifelong and adrenaline-filled sport. Simon is the most qualified and experienced windsurfing coach currently operating in Australia. He has worked at some of the largest windsurfing schools in the world, in locations such as Vassiliki (Greece) and Brandon Bay (Ireland), as well as running two windsurfing schools on the Swan River over the last five years.

The WA Wind
The season in WA starts up in early October and runs through to late March /April. We do get sea breezes earlier and later than this, but not so regularly. The general wind pattern is a light easterly in the morning, swinging around gently to a SW direction and building by about mid-day. Last year, my average sail rented was in between 5.0m and 5.7m with over 6.0m rarely getting used. Every couple of weeks, the wind really kicks in hard to 4.0m weather for one or two days, as a heat through pushes down from the north, then leaving us with hot, easterly winds. During the summer, WA experiences heat troughs which effectively kill the sea breezes for 2-3 days, but Safety Bay seems to still get a sea breeze, albeit a late one, when Perth gets nothing.

For the complete beginner, our Learn to Windsurf Course will get you up and running in no time. Class sizes are limited to 6 per instructor, ensuring each pupil gets plenty of attention. All participants are provided with equipment, wetsuit (if needed), and sunscreen. All you need to bring are some refreshments, a hat and your board shorts.

This course contains most of the practical elements found in the adult course but with less theory and more emphasis on play and fun. The equipment used is specially designed for kids, with scaled down masts, booms, and sails.

Over the summer we run weeklong courses, which offer 8 hours of tuition plus unlimited equipment hire over the five days. We offer this package to all levels, from complete novice to advanced sailor. Due to the nature of this course, early booking is essential.

For the windsurfer who wants to move on to stronger wind techniques.
Course includes: The beach start
Introduction to the harness
Stronger wind stance
Rigging (fine tuning)
Introduction to the foot straps

For the windsurfer who wants to move onto smaller boards, and needs to refine their planing skills. You should already be familiar with beach starting, harness and foot straps. Course includes: Stance and speed control
Steering whilst planing
Stronger wind stance
Upwind/downwind sailing
Water starting
Introduction to the carve gybe
Course Cost $150 exclusive of equipment
2 x 2-hour sessions in the PM
Seven days a week (Please note, a minimum of two pupils is required for the course to run)

At this level it is advantageous to have 1-1 coaching. This way the coach can work on specific skills directly relevant to the pupil.

We offer a special rate to all schools and colleges. Sessions are normally one to two hours over an 8-week term. Courses are AYF certificated and cover the whole of the TL7 syllabus.

Accommodation A
Our permanent Surf Camp is situated on the beach in Lancelin. This option is fully catered with three great meals provided per day. You get private tents with comfy air mattresses. By private, we mean you will have your own tent or swag for yourself or small group (three-man tents). There is also surround sound DVD tent for all guests to use, a permanent drinks station, and excellent wind and shade protection, all within metres of the beach. (Which means you can easily return for personal items or siesta/"nana nap" time!)

You can stay rigged up all week! If you are bringing your own windsurfing kit, you will not have to derig. Our secure storage can hold your sails for your entire stay. We are the only accommodation option in Lancelin offering this luxury, at the surf camp.

Our Windsurfing Equipment consists of the following:
F2 Primes for beginners & intermediates.
Boards from the Mistral, F2 and JP range.
North & Neil Pryde sails.

We will also be offering a range of advanced free ride, wave boards and slalom boards.

Our novice sails are specially designed by Hot Sails Maui, and include the Micro Slides, especially for kids. We are proud to be the first school in Australia to use these revolutionary sails.

For intermediate and advanced courses we are using North and Neil Pryde sails.
We stock sizes from 7.0m down to 4.0m so all sizes and wind are catered for.
