Kite Surfing Thailand - FAQ

extreme sports cafe kite surf thailand
All Extreme Sports Cafe Kitesurfing / Kiteboarding courses follow the IKO (International Kitesurfing Organisation) assessment system. Our kitesurf instructors are IKO qualified and at the end of each course students will receive a kitesurfing IKO card with their achieved level. All the necessary kitesurfing equipment is provided for students (excluding food and drinks) and the kitesurf courses last between 4 and 5 hours per day depending on the wind conditions. Students are advised to wear a hat and apply sun-cream as they will be spending a lot of time in the sun. Students must be 16 years or older, although we can teach children under 16 to kitesurf, with their parent’s permission and presence.

1. When is the best time to come to Thailand for kitesurfing?

The best period is from the beginning of November to the end of April. July and August can also be very good but the wind can be inconsistent at this time.

2. What conditions do you teach kitesurfing in?

In Chumpon and Phuket we teach in large areas of waist deep water. In Hua Hin we teach at a very long, (5 kilometres) , and wide beach with a side shore wind.

Do also check out our new Kitesurfing Thailand locations.. Pattaya / Jomtien and Koh Samui.

3. What are the average windspeeds at your 5 different kitesurfing locations?

In Chumpon,(November and December), windspeeds are usually between 14 and 22 knots with many 18 knot days.

In March and April the windspeed in Chumphon is between 12 and 16 knots.

In Hua Hin,(March and April), windspeeds are usually between 12 and 18 knots with many 16 knot days.

In Phuket (January,February,July and August) windspeeds are usually between 12 and 18 knots with many 16 knot days.

Do also check out our new Kitesurfing Thailand locations.. Pattaya / Jomtien and Koh Samui.

4. How does the north east monsoon work exactly?

The north east monsoon is the main wind maker in Thailand. Thailand experiences the north east monsoon from the middle of October to the middle of March. The north east monsoon brings strong north easterly winds from China. In the middle or second half of October these north east winds first arrive in the northern part of Thailand. Chumpon is one of the first areas to get it.Areas to the north of Chumpon are too far inside the gulf of Thailand and are too sheltered thus getting less wind. After it's arrival the north east monsoon slowly moves southwards, usually by the middle of December it's full power has reached Phuket and then finally by the beginning or midle of January it reaches Singapore.

5. Does it rain a lot in the north east monsoon?

In October when the north east monsoon first arrives there is widespread rain all over Thailand. In the first half of November Chumpon still experiences some rain showers but these don't last long and most of the time the weather is good. As the monsoon moves southwards it takes the rain with it. The south of Thailand on the east coast from Surat Thani downwards, experiences much heavier rain because the north east wind has covered a long distance crossing the south china sea and has picked up a lot of moisture along the way.

6. Does it get cold in the north east monsoon?

In Chumphon in the evenings the temperature goes down to about 20 degrees sometimes, you might want to bring a sweater. During the day it's a very pleasant 28 degrees. In Phuket and Hua Hin it's warm all year round.

7. In March and April it's supposed to be windy in Hua Hin but every time I look at the weather website "windguru" it shows very little wind for Hua Hin during these months.

Weather websites like windguru only show "pressure wind",ie wind that's caused by low presurre and high pressure systems. Windguru does not show "thermal winds",that is wind caused by the heating of the land during the day. Windguru might show only a 4 knot southerly wind while it's really blowing 18 knots. In March and April Chumphon gets very consistent thermal winds.

8. How many kitesurfing students do you teach per teacher?

We teach a maximum of 2 students per teacher. This way we can closely supervise each student and make the learning process easier, faster and safer. Most other schools teach 4 students per teacher.

9. How long have you had your kitesurfing schools in Thailand?

We opened our kitesurfing schools almost 6 years ago.

10. Do you sell kitesurfing equipment?

We sell all the latest Naish, RRD and North gear.

11. Where are your kitesurfing shops?

In Phuket at Chalong circle,in Chumpon at Tung Wa Laen beach and in Hua Hin at Baan Kao Tao. Also at our center near Pattaya. For more information please contact us. We can then assist putting your order together.
