Just 40 minutes drive south from Perth are the popular windsurfing beaches of Safety Bay, Shoalwater Bay and Warnboro Sound - home waters of Extreme Sports Cafe's Australian Kite surfing center in Western Australia. The shallow bays are great for beginners and the reefs, islands and sandbars protect the sheltered waters providing ideal high-speed slalom conditions. Dec and Jan are the hottest and windiest. Early and late seasons though are less windy and more suitable for kitesurfing.

Safety Bay: There is a reason for the name. The on-shore conditions together with the sand spit create simply the best teaching and learning conditions possible. The sand spit extends perpendicularly out from the beach for 500 metres. Windsurfers and kitesurfers are separated by this sand spit, with the Windsurfers to the left and kitesurfers to the right. This means no one is getting in each other’s way. There is an established level of safety, organisation, and most of all, respect here. The bay is perfect for learning because the safety of on-shore winds means no one’s getting blown out to sea.

You can also walk up the spit to get further up wind as you’re learning. This is especially perfect for the kiter learning to body drag. On the windsurfing side, the sand bar drops off quite quickly. This is especially useful to those windsurfers learning to carve or water start just metres from our instructors. On the kitesurfing side, the sand bar slopes away very gently. This gives you a perfect waist- to chest-deep area to learn in. Learning to body drag down is just so much fun, and this make makes it simple and easy to get out and walk back up wind.

A strong thermal sea breeze often referred to as the "Fremantle Doctor" arrives most afternoons during the summer months. Best sailing is from October to April with wind speeds normally around 15 to 25 knots. When the wind doesn't turn up there are many other attractions to suit the visitor. These include diving, sailing, recreational boat and jetty fishing, vast stretches of white sandy beaches, swimming with wild dolphins and visiting sea lions and penguins on the nearby islands. Kitting is best done early and late in the season.

Kitesurfing has been around Perth for about 5 years and has now really come of age with awesome control and safety systems. Extreme Sports Café’s partner Safety Bay Kitesurfing Centre offers Kitesurfing lessons at Safety Bay or on the Swan River near Perth, all year round now.
During the winter, mainly on the Swan River between Perth and Fremantle.
The prevailing easterlies are very consistent and just as good as the summer.

Extreme Sports Café’s partner Safety Bay Kitesurfing Centre is WA’s official North and Cabrinha test centre so all the latest gear from these two iconic kite brands is available.
The center can also help you out with your gear purchases including second hand after your lesson package as well as hire equipment.

Kit Hire $50Aus per hour
Kit hire is available to competent kitesurfers, generally after 3 kitesurfing lessons with us or upon presentation of an IKO Level 2 card.

How many lessons should I take?
We would recommend 3 kitesurfing lessons to get you safely on your way.

Our lesson times are from 10am right up to 7:30 in the evening, 7 days per week. We are also available for after-work sessions.

Buying Gear
We happily advise our customers on the purchase of the right Kitesurfing gear for them, to the point where your instructor will meet you at the North/Cabrinha dealer to help you out with your new or second-hand purchase.
We also have numerous second-hand kites for sale.

For those unable to make it down to Safety Bay, we can also conduct kitesurfing lessons at Lucky Bay, Applecross by appointment only.

REFUNDS
In case of adverse weather conditions, we will change the kite surfing lesson schedule to another date.
If this is not possible then the guests will receive a full refund of the prepaid missed lessons and a credit for any deposit also.

PRE-BOOKING
We recommend you to pre-book as soon as you can.
We will ask you for a 10% deposit when booking.
The balance of the fees need to be paid one month prior to arrival at our school.

All courses follow the IKO (International Kitesurfing Organisation) assessment system. Our instructors are IKO qualified and at the end of each course students will receive an IKO card with their achieved level. All the necessary equipment is provided for students (excluding food and drinks) and the courses last between 4 and 5 hours per day depending on the wind conditions. Students are advised to wear a hat and apply sun-cream as they will be spending a lot of time in the sun. Students must be 16 years or older, although we can teach children under 16 with their parent’s permission and presence.
