Extreme Sports Café has teamed up with a kiteboarding school in The Dominican Republic with a reputation for its open and friendly atmosphere so you can come and discover Kitesurfing in paradise. Where all levels of kiters from complete beginners to pros come to take kite surfing lessons, rip up the waves, or just chill out and watch the show.

The Dominican Republic shares an island with Haiti, its neighbour country on the western third. The island is called Hispaniola and is one of the Major Antilles. Located on the north shore of the Caribbean island paradise of the Dominican Republic, is Cabarete, loved for all types of watersports as well as kiteboarding. Cabarete is a small Caribbean town with the reputation of having the most fantastic kitesurfing conditions in the world. With constant trade winds and warm waters this is the ideal place to learn to Kitesurf.

While there are areas all over the island that kitesurfing can be practiced, the kitesurfing beach just outside Cabarete, is considered to be the best place in the Dominican Republic, if not one of the best places in the world for kitesurfing. Cabarete was host of the largest Kiteboarding event in the World (Presidente Kiteboarding World Cup 2006 – PKRA 2006 World Tour 3rd stop). Most of the worlds best came to Cabarete to compete in perfect conditions and have the best time of their lives.

The Eastern Trade Winds blow side-shore (right to left) across the bay. The winds are light in the morning, picking up as the day goes on. The outer reef provides ensures flatter waters within the bay and wavy conditions both on and outside it. The winds tend to be a little lighter in the winter but this is when swell (waves) are generally at their biggest. The summer tends to provide less swell (waves) but stronger wind conditions.

Extreme Sports Café’s new Dominican Republic Kitesurfing School is on the upwind tip of the kitesurfing beach giving us a premier location and our beach grill 'Chichiguas' brings hungry kiters to our garden all day. This is a fantastic place to learn kitesurfing. The wind picks up gently at around 11AM to 1PM and then progressively gets stronger as the day progresses. This makes the mornings great for kitesurfing theory and practice on the beach, then go out to learn and practice kitesurfing on the water later on in the day.

This 1hour kitesurfing session can include any kitesurfing skills you may need to practice from kite flying & Safety to Power Control & Up Wind Riding or any advanced training. Eg: Turning, First jumps, Downwind runs, Riding toe side, Wave Riding, More hang time, First Back Loop and much more.

1-Hour Essential Knowledge IKO Levels 1-3 $30US
This 1hour kitesurfing Knowledge session can cover any aspect of Kite Surfing you may need to know like 5 line Bars & Kites, Bow Kites, Basic Aerodynamics Kites, Lift & Drag, Turning & Stalling, Kite Maintenance, Board maintenance and much more.

Supervision and Equipment Rental 1 Session $75US
This is one 3hour kitesurfing session with supervision for IKO Level 2 Kitesurfers.
Supervision is for those who cannot stay upwind or need some assistance, or if your instructor does not think you are ready to practice alone. Supervision includes all the equipment you need to kitesurf plus an assistant who will stay with you and keep a close eye on you for your safety.

Advanced Kitesurfing Courses

Advanced Kitesurfing Training IKO Level 3+
If you want to move on to the next level and start to jump, make power turns, ride switch or back rolls then take a one to one Advanced Kitesurfing Training Session with a level 3 Kitesurfing Instructor. Catered to your learning needs, lessons are conducted with Radio Helmets, from a Support Boat or during long down wind runs. IKO Examiner and Head Instructor Jon Dodds leads the Advanced Training Sessions.

Important notes for Kitesurfing Cabarete with Extreme Sports Cafe.

Please Note:
• Prices are per person and include all Kiteboarding Equipment, Instructors and Assistants. Price also includes Equipment, Personal Injury and Third Person Liability Insurance.
• All students receive an IKO Work Book to help you learn some of the theoretical aspects of Kite Boarding, while giving you something to take home and revise next time you ride.
• The wind picks up gently at around 11AM to 1PM and then progressively gets stronger as the day progresses. This makes the mornings great for theory and practice on the beach, you can go out to learn and practice on the water later on in the day.
• The water temperature is always about a comfy 26°C (79°F) so you don't ever really need a wetsuit (but it does provide some protection against bruises though).
• Cabarete is a small, laid-back Caribbean beach village located only 20 minutes away from the Puerto Plata International Airport on the northern shore of the Dominican Republic.

All extreme sports cafe kitesurfing courses in the caribbean follow the IKO (International Kitesurfing Organisation) assessment system. Our instructors are IKO qualified and at the end of each course students will receive an IKO card with their achieved level. All the necessary equipment is provided for students (excluding food and drinks) and the courses last between 4 and 5 hours per day depending on the wind conditions. Students are advised to wear a hat and apply sun-cream as they will be spending a lot of time in the sun. Students must be 16 years or older, although we can teach children under 16 with their parent’s permission and presence.
