The seasons on Phuket are dictated by the tropical monsoon, which is characterised by prevailing winds that blow from the northeast for half the year, then reverse and blow from the southwest, producing a dry season and a wet season. The dry season begins in December and usually lasts until March. This is also the coolest time of year. The rainy season begins in June and lasts until October. Its hot, humid and wet! During the transitional periods, which last a month or so the weather is often hard to predict. The period before the rainy season, around April - May, is the hottest time of year. There may be a lot of rain or none at all. The October - November transition is cooler and usually quite wet.

Phuket Island Thailand

Thailand's Andaman coast extends for 870 kilometres from the Surin Islands on the northern border with Burma to Tarutao National Park on the southern border with Malaysia. Phuket lies on the west coast of Southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea and is Thailand's largest island at 550sq km. Phuket is roughly the same size as Singapore, and is surrounded by many many smaller islands. Some of these islands are accessible to small craft from Phuket, many of them uninhabited, many of them forested and fringed with spectacular coral reefs. You often won't find a footprint on the beach.

Phuket has a wide choice of beaches to suit every taste and requirement. Most of the beaches are located on the west coast of the island. The quieter beaches tend to be found towards the island's northwestern coastline, while the greatest concentration of hotels, shops and restaurants is located around Patong and stretches south towards Karon and Kata.

  • The winds blow from the East, November to April, which is ideal for Windsurfing.
  • The West monsoon winds blow, May to October. Fun-board is still possible but the waves are often very big.
  • Every year, the Phuket International Surfing contest is held in mid-September.
  • Temperatures in Phuket range between 24 and 36 °C, and the water is between 27 and 30°C.
It's never really necessary to wear a wet suit but a lycra vest is recommended to avoid sunburn.

Nai Harn - A quiet little spot at the southern end of Phuket, Nai Harn is one of the island's most beautiful locations and most popular places with in-the-know locals. This quiet and tranquil place has only a few hotels including the The Royal Phuket Yacht Club and is a favourite anchorage for boats during the high season. The local restaurants just above the beach make a great place to relax with a sundowner.

Getting There - Phuket Thailand

  • By Air - There are many scheduled flights to Phuket, domestic and International. Flights from Bangkok take around 1hour 20 minutes. Book your tickets early, especially during the high season from November to April. Phuket International Airport is situated at the northern end of the island, 45 mins drive from Phuket City. Tel: +66 (0)76-327-230 (information counter extension 1111 or 1122).
  • By Train - There is no direct rail-line to Phuket, but trains do run to nearby Surat Thani. From here you catch a bus to Phuket. Trains in Thailand are slow so take an overnight sleeper and you'll not loose too much time. The train to Surat Thani takes around 12 hours and the coach is another 5-6 hours. For train schedules contact the State Railway of Thailand. Tel: 02 220 4334. Advance tickets are available at all main stations or the Bangkok Advance Booking Office. Tel: 02 225 0300 ext. 5200-3 or go to http://www.railway.co.th/english/index.asp

Don't put anything valuable in the luggage compartment of the bus. You may find it's not there when you arrive. There have also been reports of thieves befriending tourist and offering them snacks which contain drugs to make them fall asleep, then rob them while they doze.

Getting Around - Phuket Thailand
Songthaews (passenger pick-up vehicles) are a common mode of transport on Phuket. Phuket’s songthaews are larger than those found in other areas of Thailand. They travel between the town and beaches. There are also conventional bus services and motorbike taxis. The latter are found in large numbers in the main town and at Patong Beach. The traditional Tuk-tuks have been replaced by small vans, mostly red or some are yellow. Songthaews are the cheapest mode of transportation for travel from town to town.

  • There are two types of buses - the Songtaew - blue open-air buses that run between Phuket Town and the main resorts, and air-conditioned "micro" buses that service the Phuket Town area. Songthaews (small pick up buses) cost around 15-20 baht for all destinations.
  • For transfers from the airport, there's only one authorized "limousine" service that has fixed fares. Expect to pay 100-200 Baht for a shared minibus or up to 500 baht for a private taxi, depending on your destination. There are also metered taxis for hire just outside the airport terminal and around Phuket Town and other centers.
  • For short distances tuk tuks are fine, but their small size makes them uncomfortable for anything longer than about 30 minutes. Cost is usually 100Baht depending on the distance, the weather and your bargaining skill.

Windsurfing books we recommend...

Windsurfing: The Complete Guide

Author: Ian Currer

I chose this book because I had already read Touching Cloudbase  (A book on paragliding by the same author) and found it excellent.
I was not disapointed, this is very comprehensive and answered all the questions I had, not only about improving my sailing but about buying stuff, setting up your gear etc. which is well worth the cover price alone. Great Pictures and illustrations too.

Written in a very easy untechnical style, and well suited to the beginner and to someone like me trying to improve. Not much good to experienced windsurfers or competitors though. Recommended.

Windsurfing: The Essential Guide to Equipment and Techniques

Author: Simon Bornhoft

What is it that makes windsurfing addictive and draws millions of people to lakes, harbors and coastlines around the world whenever the wind's up?

Beginners will be able to get on their board with a minimum of delay and intermediate windsurfers will be able to advance their techniques and improve on their weaknesses. The emphasis is on easy-to-follow instructions accompanied by clear illustrations. Safety issues and how to read the weather are addressed. Recommended.
