Pattaya and Jomtien are blessed with sunny warm weather most of the year, and water temperatures between 25 and 27 degrees.

  • A steady North East Monsoon is blowing between 10 to 25 knots from November throughout mid January, creating choppy conditions in Pattaya, while Jomtien has relatively flat water due to the side – off shore winds direction.
  • From January throughout March the winds usually blows 8 to 12 knots from West to South West, which are ideal conditions for windsurfing lessons.
  • The best time for lessons are from March to June with South Westerly winds between 8 to 20 knots, as well as low tides – creating wide beaches suitable for beginners.
  • The South West Monsoon starts to blow mid July but winds get lighter throughout August and you can expect between 6 to 12 knots until the North East winter Monsoon returns in November.

Jomtien Beach: Jomtien Beach is 6kms long, fairly flat and has consistent winds blowing in off the Thai Gulf. Sometimes the waves off shore can reach a metre and a half or more, but closer to the shore the water is much calmer. There aren't a lot of rocks or coral to watch out for and because of the long beach it's not too crowded either.

Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Center Jomtien - Thailand
Uncle Chat, founded the Windsurfing and Kite surfing School more than 20 years ago. Windsurfing became available in Thailand in the late 70’s while Chat was studying Economic Science at the Thammasut University in Bangkok. However, this exiting new sport soon became his passion and main interest, his enthusiasm and guidance also attracted the interest of friends and others. The windsurfing society in Thailand grew rapidly, and Uncle Chat initiated the Thai Wind surfing Association and became its first President in the early 80’s. It was sailing at lakes and Bangkok Rivers, but the base for windsurfing quickly shifted to beautiful Jomtien Beach where the school was established in 1984.

As a true pioneer Uncle Chat is a living legend among windsurfers and friends. His perception and friendly approach is well known and if you have a question about Jomtien, windsurfing or life in general,- “ have a chat with Uncle Chat.”

Uncle Chat’s son Pop grew up at Jomtien Beach and was a born windsurfer. With all elements in place - including his natural talent, he very quickly became one of Thailand’s best windsurfers and collected several National titles as well as top international results such as a 7th place in the Raceboard Worlds in 1991, and a Silver medal at the South East Asian Games in 1992. Pop was a member of the Thai National team from 1989 to 1995.

His organization skills have been a key factor for his success and today’s strong position for windsurfing in Thailand. He was appointed assistant coach to the 2000 Thai Olympic Team, and acted as secretary to the Thai Windsurfing Association from 2001 to 2004 when he was directly instrumental in the huge success of not less than three World Championships and one Continental Championship in the Formula and IMCO Classes. Apart from managing the school Pop is also the advisor to the Thai Wind surfing Association and one of the advocates in promoting Thailand as a first-rate windsurfing destination and arena for future International events.

Pop has been teaching wind surfing to people of all ages for almost to decades and his experience and in- depth knowledge is unparalleled after a life dedicated to windsurfing.

Windsurfing books we recommend...

Windsurfing: The Complete Guide

Author: Ian Currer

I chose this book because I had already read Touching Cloudbase  (A book on paragliding by the same author) and found it excellent.
I was not disapointed, this is very comprehensive and answered all the questions I had, not only about improving my sailing but about buying stuff, setting up your gear etc. which is well worth the cover price alone. Great Pictures and illustrations too.

Written in a very easy untechnical style, and well suited to the beginner and to someone like me trying to improve. Not much good to experienced windsurfers or competitors though. Recommended.
