The Algarve has Europe’s best all year round climate with the temperatures averaging between 30 degrees C during the summer months. Whether you fancy going on a surf trip with other experienced surfers or you're a complete novice and want to take surfing lessons or courses with our partner surf school, you won't be disappointed. Join Extreme Sports Café for a surfing experience or surf trip in the Algarve, Portugal.

The Algarve is situated at the extreme west of Europe in the South of Portugal, bordering on Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. The Algarve is one of the most visited regions in the country with its spectacular golden beaches, dramatic coastline (200km of coastline) and rugged cliff faces. There are scattered remains of Roman palaces and also many Moorish influences as well as little whitewashed fishing villages, which are dotted along the coastline. The Algarve has a generally mild climate throughout the year. In the summer months the temperature often reaches 30 degrees with a seawater temperature of around 21-22 degrees. The winter months sometimes experience a little rainfall but the temperature in general doesn’t often fall below 15 degrees.

Extreme Sports Café’s partner Algarve Surf School has both BSA and FPS qualified staff and are fully trained lifeguards. The Algarve Surf School has been running for 10 years now and the staff are qualified to teach both beginners and intermediates. Our partner Portugal Surf school is based at Praia do Amado on the beautiful west coast about 25mins outside Lagos. Transfers are done in and around Lagos but if you have your own transport you are more than welcome to join in as well. (Please always enquire in advance) Amado beach boasts the best conditions for beginners in the Algarve and hence it is where the beach hut is and where our partner Portugal Surf school mostly conduct surfing lessons from. There are a number of surf courses for beginners available and body boards and fins for hire.

  • Algarve SurfShop

For the complete novice we supply a Surf School package, the beginner's lessons are taught in waist deep water.

  • For those who want to take advantage of the best waves the Algarve has to offer, you'll find our Surf Trips will take you to the surf spots that are best suited to your level.
  • If it's winter waves you are after, surfing in Portugal in the winter offers those with a bit more experience some powerful less crowded waves. The weather also remains about 16º Celsius and with many offshore days or no wind at all, it makes the Algarve a perfect winter surfing destination.

So whether you come for the summer party atmosphere or a chilled winter sun getaway, Lagos and the other unspoiled surrounding towns and villages all the way up through the natural park to the dramatic west coast has something to offer everyone.

Extreme Sports Café’s Algarve partner is a successful business purely through the magic of the climate, people, food, and of-course the many activities they have on offer. But most importantly is their approach and how they do it.

  • “We know what makes your trip that bit more special. We know the best surf spots in any conditions better than anyone else, after all that's what you're paying for. With us you can be guaranteed optimum service in EVERYTHING from your transport to your accommodation. When we take you surfing or anywhere for that matter we'll spice it up by taking you off-road in our Land rovers so you can get to see a bit of the countryside as well. We offer something different to other tour operators in that you have complete control over your entire trip, it can be tailor made to suit your budget, time frame and mood. We are also the ONLY tour operator in the Algarve that combines so many activities for you to enjoy. And the best thing about it is a price nobody else can touch. So basically you know when you book with us you get looked after PERSONALLY.”

Lagos and Luz are the heart of the west Algarve and beautifully retain their small town charm. Ideally situated just under an hour from Faro airport, Lagos is also the terminal of the Algarve railway. Lagos has its own modern marina, beach cafes, golf courses and within its ancient walls lies a network of bars, restaurants, year round entertainment and a bustling nightlife to suit everyone.

  • Lagos may be the hub of many of our sports activities on offer but the unspoilt natural park which follows the south coast to Sagres (the end of the world) all the way up along the dramatic west coast, hosts a multitude of scenic dirt tracks, quaint villages, secluded beaches and inspiring cliffs, all worth a visit if you're not already staying there.
  • The Algarve has a generally mild climate throughout the year. In the summer months the temperature often reaches 30 degrees with a seawater temperature of around 21-22 degrees. The winter months sometimes experience a little rainfall but the temperature in general doesn’t often fall below 15 degrees.

Surfing books we recommend...

Learn to Surf  By James Maclaren

An introductory guide to the sport of surfing discusses traditional surfing, bodyboarding, and body surfing while offering detailed instructions for the complete beginner.

Conversationally written. No jargon or surf lingo to confuse the beginner. Breaks a potentially difficult and complex subject into easy-to-digest tidbits. Targeted for people who have never so much as picked up a surfboard in their lives, but who are intrigued by this exhilarating sport. Anybody can LEARN TO SURF, let's do it!

Surfers's Start-up: Beginner's Guide to Surfing (Start-up Sports) By Doug Werner

This illustrated handbook covers the basics of surfing gear, surfing conditions, safety, surfer etiquette and the history of surfing. Moreover it teaches the novice how to cope: not only with the waves and learning frustrations but with crowds and (gulp!) locals too.

Fit to Surf: The Surfer's Guide to Strength and Conditioning By Rocky Snyder

Not only is surfing an extremely popular male sport, it is the second fasted growing women's sport, behind golfing, and is destined to become even more popular. Surfing is also an extremely demanding sport, requiring absolute fitness for success. No wonder then, that Rocky Snyder sold thousands of copies of this book in its first, self-published edition with minimal promotion and no bookstore distribution. Fit To Surf is filled with black & white photographs and provides valuable information to the reader about how to create a personal conditioning program specific to surfing. The book is designed to help readers build more surfing strength, enhance endurance, increase balance and coordination, and reduce chances of injury. The book contains sample workouts for the home, gym, and on the water.
