Cambodia is still very much a hidden treasure - particularly for the PPG pilot (Powered paragliding) due to the fact that there are so many varied and stunning sites to fly. The country is politically stable and safe now, with improved road networks, good accommodation ranging from inexpensive guesthouses to 5 star resorts and access to medical services. The kingdom's capital and largest city is Phnom Penh. The country borders Thailand to its west and northwest, Laos to its northeast, and Vietnam to its east and southeast. In the south it faces the Gulf of Thailand. Cambodia’s geography is dominated by The Mekong River and the Tonlé Sap (fresh water lake an important source of fish)

Cambodia has two distinct seasons. The rainy season, which runs from May to October, can see temperatures drop to 22 °C and is generally accompanied with high humidity. The dry season lasts from November to April when temperatures can raise up to 40 °C around April. The best months to visit Cambodia are November to January when temperatures and humidity are lower. Cambodia also experiences tropical monsoons. Southwest monsoons blow inland bringing moisture-laden winds from the Gulf of Thailand and Indian Ocean from May to October. The northeast monsoon ushers in the dry season, which lasts from November to March. The country experiences the heaviest precipitation from September to October with the driest period occurring from January to February.

Simon - Paramotor Instructor Comments: “The course fee covers a student to safely obtain solo flying and then rather than call it a day then, I like to be able to offer at least a couple of flights around the countryside. I accompany the student too with a separate engine and with radio contact and I have found this allows students to practice and learn a lot more skills that are required to fly confidently and is a lot more fun that simply buzzing around a training field.”

Paramotor Equipment
There are many paramotor manufacturers now across the world. Extreme Sports Café’s partner Cambodian Paramotor School are partners with Nirvana Systems. Based in Zlin in the Czech Republic, the Nirvana team headed up by Pavel Brezina produce paramotors known worldwide for their reliability, portability, safety and sleek design.
- The Nirvana product is extremely popular in Japan, Malaysia and Cambodia, as well as in Europe and Australia, so the engines have been tested and approved with thousands of flying hours in varied conditions. Extreme Sports Café’s partner Cambodian Paramotor School has a good working relationship with other Nirvana dealers across Asia allowing regularly sharing of information and access spare parts easily.
- A pilot quite simply straps on a 2 (or in some cases 4) stroke motor, launches a paragliding wing, runs and lifts off. After an hour or two of buzzing around at heights varying from 1 - 3000ft, you can touch down lightly either at the same take off point or another. The beauty of powered paragliding is its portability. You can transport all of your equipment easily on a plane, in a car or even a tuk-tuk! This allows you to access varied flying sites throughout the country and the rest of the world.
Is it legal?
Most countries including Cambodia have no license requirements for flying a paramotor. At present there are only a handful of pilots in Cambodia and we would like to protect the sport here. Consequently pilots should avoid controlled airspace such as airports and VIP residences, military installations, historical sites such as Angkor Wat, and flying over largely populated areas.
Is it safe?
Powered paragliding is widely regarded as the safest form of aviation. Due to low speeds, the advancements in manufacturer’s equipment in the last five years, and because the pilot is in an incredibly safe position under a ‘parachute’, accidents are rare and mostly occur on the ground due to poor motor and wing handling. However, like any form of aviation there is an element of risk. Almost all reported accidents happen as a result of pilot error and not due to equipment malfunction. It is not recommended to fly without receiving training from a qualified instructor.
