Kitesurfing Pranburi Thailand

Hua Hin Thailand is becoming an increasingly popular kite-boarding destination for beginners and accomplished kite surfers alike. Extreme Sports Cafe can now offer 2 locations in the Hua Hin area for your kiteboarding lessons and riding, first is a Beach location in Pranburi (just 20kms south of Hua Hin City) this is a beautiful spacious untouched paradise with a long sweeping beach and high end resorts along the coastline, this beach is very new to Thailand’s Kitesurfing scene and as of yet is not at all crowded, you can ride and learn in paradise surroundings with no buzz of the city to dampen your experience. The second school is based in the heart of Hua Hin just parallel to the main road of Hua Hin, this area can get extremely busy in the months of Mar – May but not a bad spot if you want the madness and party life of a city with a beach.

Beach Location Pranburi - Over the years Hua Hin main beach has become a very popular kitesurfing spot, for this reason the beach has become crowded with students, riders and kite schools along the beach. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Hua Hin city, crowded beaches and traffic then Pranburi is the perfect spot for you.

  • Extreme Sports Cafés new partner kitesurfing school in Pranburi is Thailand’s Newest Kitesurfing Spot, with 7 months of solid wind and 5 months of possible thermals. This is surely Thailand’s windiest and most picturesque Kiteboarding beach in the Hua Hin area.

    Kitesurfing Pranburi

  • Surrounded by picturesque mountains this little beach town (pak nam pran beach) is a private little paradise with many scenic attractions and 7km of unspoiled yellow sand beaches. You can ride here with no worries of tangling lines or crashing into people, it is our little piece of paradise.
  • The kite beach has many sand bars for perfect shallow teaching areas, the wind is steady from November – May between 12 – 25 knots daily, June – Oct Pranburi still gets wind but not as consistent as the previous months and the kite school can still teach kitesurfing lessons during this time.
  • The Beach - Pak Nam Pran beach is a perfect kite spot for all levels of Kitesurfers, the kite school has a 7km long stretch of beach completely rock and coral free. There is one high and one low tide per day with huge sandbar areas for shallow water teaching and deeper channels for waist depth teaching. On high tide though the north end of the beach disappears and the area in front of the kite school also loses some beach but still has more than enough beach left for launching and landing your kites safely.
  • Kite Zone Pranburi has full IKO accredited school facilities, Kite shop and storage areas with restaurant bar and resort accommodation on site.

Hua Hin City Location - The beach is about 5km long and runs parallel with the Hua Hin highway and city area. The beach is extremely wide so a safe spot for launching and landing with plenty of room for every one of you keep it spread out.

Extreme Sports Café’s partner Hua Hin/Pranburi Kite surfing school will ensure that all lessons are carried out with 100% safety in mind with a maximum of 2 students per teacher. Other kite schools around tend to overcrowd their Kite surfing lessons, resulting in waiting for others or keeping other waiting. (Everyone learns at a different rate and should feel comfortable doing so)

  • Teaching with only 2 students per teacher makes a huge difference to your learning time and enables students to progress quicker and safer.

  • The Kite school only teach you in shallow water, this means the instructor can stand beside you at all times. You will be taught in a clear spot away from other kiters to ensure that nobody gets hurt if something goes wrong.
  • The Kite school now also uses Radio helmets for real time coaching and advanced lessons.

Wind & Weather Kitesurfing Hua Hin/Pranburi

Pranburi wind is steady and sure for 7 months a year, the strong wind begins November and carries on through to May, we get 2 types of wind here in Pranburi, the Monsoon winds run from January to around end of February blowing between 12 – 25 knots then the Thermal wind kicks in March onward generating afternoon sea breeze winds between 12 – 20 knots.

  • The beauty of Pranburi is the thermal wind that gets generated in the off season, Hua Hin just 20kms north would have no wind yet the wind here is enough to run full kiteboarding courses. This is unique to the Pranburi area due to the huge mountainous area behind the coast line, you will find in the months between June – October we will get random thermals generating enough wind to teach beginners although not ideal for intermediate riders.
  • Kitesurfing Pranburi Thailand

Please Note: The wind that Hua Hin and Sam Roi Yot national Park experience is a thermal wind, caused by the heating of the land, wind sites on the internet such as "windguru" or "windfinder.com" don't show this localised thermal effect, they might be showing only 3 to 4 knots of wind whilst in reality it's blowing 18 knots. What you have to look at is the wind direction on for example: windfinder.com weather map, if the wind direction is south east or south in March or April then you are sure to get wind.

Notes Kitesurfing Hua Hin/Pranburi

  • Things to look out for - There is quite a lot of jellyfish in the water all year round here, we recommend wearing stinger pants under your boardies (you can purchase these in our shop, booties and a rash vest for full protection. We also have some jellyfish protective sun cream available. Our first aid kit is available with vinegar and soothing agents just in case you do catch a sting. There are also areas of the beach that have quite a few shells around, we recommend wearing booties if you’re walking any length of the beach with your kite.
  • The beach road runs parallel with the sand line here so for general riding it is a a lot safer to stay 50 meters plus offshore when the tide is high, there is also trees dotted along the sand line so care must be taken when approaching the landing area.
  • The best times for kiteboarding in Pranburi are November through until May(beginners – expert) June – October (beginners only).

Getting Around Hua Hin

  • Hua Hin is small enough that one can wander for hours without the need of motor transportation. Most hotels are no more than few minutes walk to the beach, the market or a friendly restaurant. Bicycles, motorcycles and small jeeps can be rented from shops around the Hua Hin Bazaar, near the Sofitel entrance. Unless you have extensive experience dodging kids, bicycles, scooters and the occasional cow, be very careful when driving yourself.

Getting There Hua Hin

  • Hua Hin can be reached via Bus, Taxi, Train or Plane from Bangkok.

By Bus

  • You can either get the cheap bus for 100 baht (We really don’t recommend this as it is the public service bus that stops at every nook and cranny on the way and it doesn’t have any aircon) or you can get the VIP bus which costs 28 baht more this will take you there direct, you will have comfortable seats and aircon the entire way.
  • To get the VIP bus get yourself to Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River, ignore the buses that are waiting outside as these are the public service buses, go to the ticket booth inside the terminal (it’s the place that has the roof over it) and book your ticket there. The buses leave once every 30 minutes beginning at 04:00am in the morning and stopping just before midnight everyday.

    Kitesurfing Pranburi

  • When planning your trip to the bus station in Bangkok please give ample time for traffic jams in the morning and evening, the commuter traffic can get ridiculously heavy so be sure to allow extra time on your journey.

By Taxi

  • You can catch a taxi from the airport from 1,700 – 2,200 baht, depends on how good your haggling is, pick an older looking taxi (they tend to be cheaper) and act like you have done the trip before, ask him the price and he will probably start high, just mention last time you paid 1,700 and they will usually agree, just remember to keep smiling!

By Train

  • Kitesurfing Pranburi

All trains going south stop at Hua Hin & Pranburi, but the most convenient and comfortable is the second class Special Express Diesel Railcar leaving Bangkok's Hualumphong Station at 07:45 and arriving in Hua Hin at 11:00.

By Plane

  • If you’re in a real hurry or can’t stand the bus ride for 3 – 4 hours then you can catch a 1-hour flight to Hua Hin from Bangkok. Once you land in Hua Hin you will have to take a taxi to Pak Nam Pran Beach - Pranburi, which is around 20km drive in a taxi. If you want more info on prices and timetables for this flight you can contact Siam GA at 02 535 7050.
