Extreme Sports Cafés’ new partner Portugal Kitesurfing Centre is located in a beautiful unspoiled area with no big buildings and large crowds and offers kite surfing courses and lessons from May to September. With Atlantic beaches were you can still walk around the primitive dunes and with no crowds. The centre is located on a sand strip with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and a lagoon on the other side.
The first surprising aspect for whoever visits the Tourist Region of Rota da Luz in Portugal for the first time is that everything is so close. It only takes a few minutes to go from the sun-drenched beaches to the coolness of the pine woods and vineyards and the invigorating air of the hilltops, as only a few kilometers separate the coastal areas of Ovar, Murtosa, Aveiro, Ílhavo and Vagos from the green slopes of Vale de Cambra and Águeda or from the riverbanks of the Douro River.

- Extreme Sports Cafes’ new partner Portugal Watersports Centre offers both Wind surfing and Kite surfing instruction between May and September. Located in the northwest of Portugal, near the town of Aveiro, in a picturesque fisherman Village. This water-sports centre was opened in 1997, due to the efforts of two windsurfers who wanted to provide good support for water-sports locally.
- The lagoon where kite lessons are taught has very shallow water, which is ideal for beginners and the ocean side has the Atlantic swell with waves everyday, making it very good for surf camps. There is no need for cars or buses here, you can walk straight from the kitesurfing centre to the beach, to the camping site or the hotel in about 3 min, everything is conveniently close by.
- The nearest big city with airport is Porto at about 80 Km from the spot.
The Portuguese Tourist Board licensed our partner Portuguese Watersports Centre in 2000. In 2000 they began the Kitesurfing School and were the first official Portuguese school of the international Wipika School network. Since then it has evolved, and is now recognised, both on national and international basis, for the quality of the infrastructure, services, customer support and staff.

The proximity to the sea and the existence of large bodies of water, such as the Ria of Aveiro, imprint very specific climatic characteristics to this region of Portugal.
- The climate is humid all year long and is also characterised by moderately cold winters and mild summers.
- The rainy season usually begins in October and ends in May. Therefore, the climate could be characterised as a moderately Mediterranean maritime climate. Using the values regarding Aveiro as a frame of reference, the annual average temperature is 15º C, with a temperature range of 8.5ºC.
- In the summer, the maximum temperature often exceeds 30ºC. In the winter, the average temperature is approximately 10º C. The total annual precipitation average is approximately 900 mm, however, it is higher in the mountain area.
The town of Aveiro is located about 60Km south of Porto and 260Km north of Lisbon, close to the sea. The nearest airports are in Lisbon and OPorto. From these airports Aveiro can be easily reached by train via the 'north line' or by car via the 'high-way A1'.
- Aveiro is a small sized town inside of a tourist region (Região Rota da Luz), with a versatile mix of beaches, country and mountains, and the center of the Ria de Aveiro, a unique river mouth region in the country. Kite Boarding Certification - All Extreme Sports Cafe Kitesurfing / Kiteboarding courses follow the IKO (International Kitesurfing Organization) assessment system. (unless stated otherwise) Our kitesurf instructors are IKO qualified and at the end of each course students will receive a kitesurfing IKO card with their achieved level. All the necessary kitesurfing equipment is provided for students (excluding food and drinks) and the kitesurf courses last between 4 and 5 hours per day depending on the wind conditions. Students are advised to wear a hat and apply sun-cream as they will be spending a lot of time in the sun. Students must be 16 years or older, although we can teach children under 16 to kitesurf, with their parent’s permission and presence.
