Extreme Sports Cafés partner Freediving School in Thailand offer freediving courses, from beginner level to instructor training, through A.I.D.A. - the most recognized and respected international freediving organization. A freediver relies on a single breath of air to explore the undersea world. Moving gracefully without wasting energy, a freediver can spend minutes underwater and experience the ocean as any other marine mammal does. Free from cumbersome equipment a freediver can sneak up on a turtle, or glide to the bottom for a meeting with a manta ray. Freediving on Lanta’s dive sites is an incredible experience not to be missed!
Koh Lanta offers an appealing escape from the highly popular tourist destinations of Phuket and Phi Phi islands. Once a backpacker's haven, nowadays Lanta sports some exclusive resorts and spas as well. But the friendly locals and unspoiled nature are still Lanta's main attractions.
- Koh Lanta has been named among “the world's sexiest islands” in a Forbes Magazine article. It is delightfully exotic thanks to its remote location, pristine beaches and balmy weather. Koh Lanta actually comprises 52 islands in the southernmost region of Thailand's Krabi Province. The largest and best known of these islands is Koh Lanta Yai - approximately 70 kilometers from Krabi town.
- The main island is divided in two, and shares the same name: Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. The island is mainly inhabited by the ‘Sea Gypsies’, a people whose tribal culture dates back several thousand years.
- The tourist season stretches from October to April. Most tourists, however, tend to visit the island between December and March. Each year, an increasing number of people visit during the low season, and as a result, most resorts now remain open year-round.
- The average temperature year-round is 27-33 degrees Celsius/81-91 degrees Fahrenheit. From May through September, the monsoon brings strong rains – however, the rains start and stop with sunny periods in between. From mid-October until April, you can expect low humidity and cool breezes in the evenings.
To get started in Freediving, all you need is a basic knowledge of freediving safety, a buddy to dive with, equipment and a few tips on technique. Each training day starts with a preparatory yoga session with a focus on relaxation and breathing techniques.
