Phuket Kitesurfing Notes:

  • Note: One day kite surfing rental is based on sunrise to sunset, you must do a small test to prove you can handle the Kite and gear before we rent it too you. We will only rent the kite to people who know how to Kiteboard, if you are a beginner we recommend you take lessons with one of our kitesurfing schools before you attempt to rent any gear.

  • Note: You are fully responsible for the kite equipment you are renting, if any damages occurs during your rental period you will be required to pay for the damage, if the kite equipment ends up completely mangled then you are required to replace the monetary value of the damaged items (you can take home the mangled kite equipment if you wish).
  • The kitesurfing school in Phuket uses the latest Ozone hybrid kites for maximum safety. With these kites all the student has to do is let go of the bar and the kite loses it's power completely, this way the student has total control over the kite by just moving the bar up and down, making it extremely safefor beginners and giving them the confidence to progress with Kite surfing when they leave.

Nai Yang Beach: kitesurfing/kiteboarding lessons, equipment rental from May until October. This beach is one of Phuket’s best kept secrets, being so close to the airport people tend to bypass this area and head straight for the tourist areas of Phuket, in my opinion this is a huge Kitesurfing Phuketmistake, Nai Yang beach has great charm, the locals are so friendly, the accommodation and food is cheap and the chance of any crime happening here is non- existent, you really wont be disappointed.

  • Nai Yang beach has it all! Shallow flat sections for teaching or practicing new tricks, then 2 reefs on the far right and left of the bay that give some great wave riding conditions. (its not rare to see a 3 meter swell here when it goes off) The wind here is usually Side onshore or side shore. The bay is a long sweeping bay surrounded by tamarind trees along the sand line, the area is the closest beach to Phuket International Airport (about 5 mins drive) and is an extremely quiet somewhat lethargic spot.
  • The beach at low tide leaves a huge clean launch/landing area. The Phuket kite school also does some Landboarding and Buggying here when the wind is right. At high tide they still have enough room to land and launch the kites although care must be taken.
  • If you need a little excitement in the evenings then join the guys at the Kitesurfing bar with in house DJ, sketchy dancing and generous happy hours to wet your whistle!

Things to look out for Nai Yang Beach:

  • With high tide the beach can be narrow and at the north end of the beach the wind is onshore with waves coming in, a recipe for getting your kite into a tree, wait until the tide is a bit lower and you will have a much bigger beach. With a very low tide some of the reef is exposed. Watch out for squalls (rainstorms of short duration but with strong winds) at this time of the year, you can see them coming from very far in the distance and have a lot of warning time, plus or minus 30 to 40 minutes usually.

Chalong Bay (Friendship Bungalows): Medium to high tide.

  • kitesurfing/kiteboarding lessons, equipment rental from November to March. This is like a lake as it is surrounded by land and islands. The water here is very flat and shallow for a long way out, making it a great place for beginners and for more advanced kitesurfers who want to practise their tricks.

Kitesurfing PhuketThings to look out for Chalong Bay:

Chalong Bay can only be ridden from medium to high tide, the tsunami brought in a lot of small rocks, a large area has been cleared but there are still places which we haven't been able to do yet, if you are riding from medium tide (level 2.3 metres) onwards then it's no problem and you can just about kitesurf anywhere.

  • There is only one place in front of friendship bungalows where over an area of 10 meters there is a small rock outcrop, this is easy to see and avoid. If the tide is lower then you can go to the nearby Rawai beach.

Rawai beach at the south end (Baan Had Rawai): Low tide.

At the south end of Rawai beach, about 50 meters past where the boats are, you will find a nice sandy shallow area perfect for beginners. If you go further out past the headland and out of the bay there is a beautiful island and next to it, some very nice flat water for riding.

  • Going across the channel out to the island is not for beginners though, there are sometimes strong currents running. Rawai beach at the south end can be ridden at low tides that are from 1.3 meters onwards

    Kitesurfing Phuket

Things to look out for Rawai beach:

  • Currents outside of the bay in the channel. Coral north of the spot at the south end, boats moored along the beach, you only need to walk out a little in the shallow water and you are away from them.

Layan Bay:

  • For beginners A lovely spot with shallow flat water perfect for beginners and the only bay on the west coast where at this time of the year there are no waves.

Things to look out for Layan Bay:

  • It is a small bay and only suitable for beginners. Again watch out for squalls (rainstorms of short duration but with strong winds), at this time of the year, you can see them coming from very far in the distance and have a lot of warning time, plus or minus 30 to 40 minutes usually.

Wind & Weather Phuket Kitesurfing

Phuket has the most wind for the longest time of the year in Thailand; we have 2 seasons here that run along side the low and high tourist seasons. Each season has its own spot according to the wind direction of Phuket at that time.

  • May – Oct The weather in general is HOT in Phuket, during the low season with quite a bit of rain from tropical storms off the coast passing by (this also brings good winds), these downpours can last anything from 30 mins to a few hours at a time, it is actually quite nice at times to cool off from the sticky heat we often experience this time of the year.

    Kitesurfing Phuket

  • Nov – Apr During the high season it is HOT, HOT & HOT, the skies are blue, the ocean is flat and Phuket becomes quite busy, very rarely will we see any rain this time of the year.

The best 2 times for kiteboarding in Phuket are:

  • June, July, August & September Between 12 & 18 knots This is the low season period.
  • November, December, January & February - Between 12 * 18 knots. This is the high season period when the weather is sunny and the cool north-east monsoon winds blow.

Accommodation Phuket - Nai Yang

At Nai Yang Beach there are many options for accommodation ranging from 500 THB per night up to 5,000 per night.

  • At the Nai Yang Kite Zone they have 2 plush rooms available above the Kite Shop, if you are a light sleeper they really dont recommend staying here as it can get a little noisy at night with the bar next door, if you really don’t care you will not be disappointed with

    Kitesurfing Phuket

these rooms. The front room has a balcony and seaview and is decorated beautifully.

  • Nai Yang Seaview - This is the most popular guesthouse on the beach, it is literally 20 meters from the Kite surfing School and 5 meters from the beachfront. The rooms come with either Air con room for 800thb per night (weekly rate) or fan room for 500 Baht per night (weekly rate). These rooms are well appointed and clean, the staff are friendly and helpful and the location for Kitesurfing is perfect.
  • Indigo Pearl - This is a 5 star resort located directly behind the kite school, the pool, staff and rooms here are pretty amazing, if your after Plush expensive surroundings and facilities then this is perfect.

Accommodation Phuket - Chalong Bay

  • Accommodation in Rawai/Chalong area ranges from 300 to 450 baht a day guesthouses to 5 star hotel or bungalows ranging from 1000 to 2500 Baht a night Chalong is a very central place; from here it's a 7-minute drive to kata, 3 minutes to the harbor from which boats depart to outlying islands and 5 minutes to our kitesurfing School. From the resorts it's an 8-minute walk to the main road where you can catch a bus or taxi.

    Kitesurfing Phuket

  • Low End Accomodation - Maple Leaf Resort. Mid Range Accomodation - Friendship Beach Resort.

Getting Around - Phuket

  • There are two types of buses - the Songtaew - blue open-air buses that run between Phuket Town and the main resorts, and air-conditioned "micro" buses that service the Phuket Town area. Songthaews (small pick up buses) cost 15-20 baht for all destinations. For transfer from the airport, there's only one authorized "limousine" service that has fixed fares. Expect to pay 100-200 Baht for a shared minibus or up to 500 baht for a private taxi, depending on your destination.
  • There are also metered taxis for hire just outside the airport terminal and around Phuket Town and other centers.
  • For short distances tuk tuks are fine, but their small size makes them uncomfortable for anything longer than about 30 minutes. Costs usually 100Baht depending on the distance, the weather and your bargaining skill.

Getting There - Phuket

  • Phuket can be reached via Bus or Plane from Bangkok.

By Bus

  • To get the VIP bus get yourself to Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. (ignore the buses that are waiting outside as these are the public service buses) Go to the ticket booth inside the terminal (it’s the place that has the roof over it) and book your ticket there. The buses leave once every 30 minutes beginning at 04:00am in the morning and stopping just before midnight everyday.
  • Kitesurfing Phuket

When planning your trip to the bus station in Bangkok please give ample time for traffic jams in the morning and evening, the commuter traffic can get ridiculously heavy so be sure to allow extra time on your journey.

By Plane

  • If you’re in a real hurry or can’t stand the bus ride for 11 hours then you can catch a 1 hour flight to Phuket from Bangkok. Air Asia is recommended for these flights as they are frequent and pretty cheap with reliability. Phuket International Airport is located in the north of the island. There are many scheduled flights and chartered flights from domestics and other countries in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America landing in Phuket.
